This municipality has been characterised throughout history for suffering intense emigration.
Its economy is based mainly on agriculture, in spite of the water shortage. The primary crops are carnations, potatoes and tomatoes, that for the most part are exported, as well as grape fields.
Cultivated stepped terraces, a consequence of the orography, grant it an original identity. Prolonged grazing and an abusive felling of trees, have almost totally wiped out the pine population, reducing it to its forest surface area.
